Millersville University had its birth in 1854 as Millersville Normal School. It was established to train teachers during the “normal school” movement, a crusade to reform education in the mid-nineteenth century. Eliphalet Oram Lyte, namesake of the University’s Lyte Auditorium was a past professor and president of the Millersville Normal School. He is credited with writing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” In 1927 the school became Millersville State Teacher’s College. It became Millersville University in 1983. Lyte Auditorium, a 700-seat performing arts space is located in Alumni Hall which was constructed in 1954. The auditorium is the venue for student and faculty recitals, the spring musical, as well as the annual Cultural Affairs Committee Series. The Reuter pipe organ was installed in 1955.
